In the heart of winter, Durango transforms into a vibrant hub of activity with the much-anticipated Snowdown festival, an annual celebration that has been lifting spirits since 1979. Embracing the theme "Peace, Love and Snowdown" for its 45th year, the festivities take place from January 26 to February 4, 2024. Originating as a remedy for the winter blues, Snowdown has evolved into one of Colorado's premier multi-day festivals. Initiated by John Murrah with a $2,000 boost from The Durango Herald, the festival has become legendary. Throughout the event, Durango hosts an array of entertaining activities at various venues, including bars, the County Fairgrounds, Durango Rec Center, and the Animas City Theatre. From doughnut eating contests and scavenger hunts to 3-on-3 basketball tournaments and beer trivia, the schedule is brimming with lively events. Key highlights include the Light Parade on Friday evening and the Saturday night firework show at 6 pm. Notable quirky events include the Belt Sander Drag Races and the Cribbage Tournament.
